Emergency Preparedness…for Your Pets!
With the potential threat of COVID-19 across the United States, now is a good time to revisit your emergency planning, not just for your human family but also for your pets.

Emergency plans can make a difference in a variety of crises, whether they are health-related, a natural disaster or even personal.  Make sure you have planned ahead for your pet so that in an emergency, you are prepared for yourself and your pet.

Things to Consider

  • Identify a friend or family member who can care for your pet in the event that you cannot, whether due to illness or other reasons.
  • Have your Pet Emergency Kit prepared and ready to go, so you or a designated pet caregiver have your pet’s supplies easily at hand if they need to travel to another location.
  • Ensure your pet has identification, including an ID tag and a microchip.  Double-check to make sure your own contact information associated with those IDs is correct, so you can be reached about your pet in case of an emergency.
  • Make sure your pets’ vaccinations are up-to-date so if they need to be boarded with little notice, they are able to do so.
  • Check that your pet’s medications are up-to-date and that you have at least a two-week supply.  Along with those medications, you should have dosage/administration directions and even the script from your vet for emergency refills.
  • If you need assistance with pet food and supplies, visit our Pet Pantry page.

And if you are unable to care for your pet or have someone else who can do so during an emergency situation, contact us about our short-term Crisis Care program.  Your pet’s home is with you, but we are here to provide a safe place to stay in a crisis, until your pet can reconnect with you…where they belong!
