AWLA Launches New Monthly Speaker Series

Living the Farm Sanctuary Life!

We were excited to kick off our brand new monthly speaker series with a fascinating and enlightening presentation from Gene Baur, president and co-founder of the Farm Sanctuary, last Thursday, March 8.

Founded in 1986 and now operating three sanctuaries in New York and California, the Farm Sanctuary aims to provide more information about where our food comes from and offers a home for farm animals in need. Baur shared the stories of several animals currently in the care of different sanctuaries, including Orlando the cow and Liam the sheep.

Also joining us for the presentation was Blossom, an 8-month-old turkey abandoned at a factory farm “grow house” last fall who was later adopted by a local Alexandrian. Blossom had a wonderful time meeting attendees, shaking claws and pecking at any shiny item proffered to her. Baur also shared his experiences of turkeys raised in factory farm situations and praised Blossom’s current care, including plenty of greens, a comfy home and lots of hikes to keep her active.
