Urgent Need for Dog Adopters & Fosters

We’re reaching out to our animal-loving community for a little help.

We currently have a higher-than-normal number of in-shelter dogs with upper respiratory infection (URI) symptoms, which is common in high-volume shelter environments. All dogs are being treated, and are thankfully responding well to treatment.

We are taking necessary precautions to reduce the spread of germs in the shelter, but having fewer dogs in our care would certainly increase the speed of recovery and let us kick this bug.

So, we’re asking you …

Can you adopt a dog?

Dogs with URI symptoms are available for adoption, because we know the best place for them to recover is in the comfort of a stress-free home environment. However, we do not recommend adopting a dog with an active URI if you already have animals at home.

Dogs with URI symptoms will be sent home with medications and are expected to recover fully within 7-10 days. During their treatment, dogs should be kept out of public spaces and away from other animals. Adopters will have access to our veterinary team if they have questions or concerns during their recovery.

If you’re able to adopt, come during our daily adoption hours to meet all of our wonderful animals. Click here to see all of our available dogs.

Questions about adopting a dog (or cat or rabbit)? Email us at info@AlexandriaAnimals.org or call 703-746-4774.

Can you foster a dog?

If you’re unable to adopt, please consider temporarily caring for a dog while he or she recovers. Again, this is only recommended if there are no other animals currently in the home.

We will cover the dog’s medical care (we provide needed supplies, like food, crate, toys, and more) while you foster. Fosters will also have access to our veterinary team if they have questions or concerns.

If you’re able to foster, please send us an email at foster@AlexandriaAnimals.org. Our foster team will be able to help you find a dog that will mesh well with your family and living situation.
