The Beagle Bugle: Summer 2021

Squeak All About It

ALEXANDRIA, VA – It’s hard for me to see anything but sunshine when I hear all the latest news around the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA). Maybe it’s my optimistic personality getting the best of me, but how can our recent headlines not make you smile? Reporting from our Trends Editor, Lula, brought to light that squeaky toy donations were up 40% compared to 2019 — a personal favorite of mine. Missy over on the Catministrator Beat said cuddle sessions are in near constant supply. For all of her fans, she’ll be returning with her column, Cats and Keyboards: A Purrfect Combination, next week.

As the leader of our publication pack, I know the importance of hard-hitting journalism. I was first on the scene when it was announced that Fun Frisbees were to be offered twice weekly for enrichment treats rather than once a week as they had been before. The animals of the AWLA need to stay informed. So if you see me sniffing around the treat station, you’ll know I’m just doing my job and investigating every story to the fullest and sharing the good news I find.

Thoughts from Theodore

Opinion: Hay’s Heyday Has Arrived

Hay. What’s not to love? Even those set in their opinion that the stalks are better than the buds can come together to agree that hay is having a big moment right now.

Whether it’s the latest TikTok video or your favorite vlogger, we can’t stop talking about hay: how essential it is, the health benefits, sharing our preferences and our favorite hay hacks. The last video I saw showed rabbit owners how to roll hay in a piece of lettuce and stuff it into a cardboard tube for an undeniably enjoyable snack. Whatever they think of next, hey, I’m here for it.

Wally’s Weekend

Culture and Events Column

Even a senior pup like me gets excited for the weekend. Is there anything better than getting to sleep in late, nap all day and relax on the couch with your best friend by your side? It’s such a great way to unwind after doing that by myself Monday through Friday.

If you’re a lucky pup whose human works from home, consider taking them out for lunch while you enjoy a pup-accino on the restaurant patio. Or maybe you’re a lucky pup who gets the house to themself during the day, which means your human needs some TLC: Time Lounging on the Couch. Perhaps you’re a cat. I hear being able to jump up on counters and tables is a real joy, so spend some time with your person right next to them at their level. Trust me, they’ll love it.

Whatever your weekend plans, I hope you spend it with your best friend. You know I’ll be doing the same as soon as I find mine.

Wally, 8-year-old, White and Tan Chihuahua

Weekly Weather

with Paris

Showers and more showers are in our forecast, but that’s not a cloudy outlook. I’m talking about kitten showers! Kitten season is in full swing, so kittens are flooding into the AWLA, looking for a place to stay while they grow big enough to find families.

While I can’t guarantee all kittens will be expert weather re-paw-ters like me, there is a 100% chance of playful antics, feline snuggles and rumbling purrs that might get loud at times, so prepare yourself to be showered with love.
