AWLA Invites Community Members to be Superheroes at National Adoption Event
Alexandria Shelter is Proud to Participate in 2019 ‘Clear the Shelters’ on Aug. 17
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Aug. 1, 2019) — In coordination with NBC4 and Telemundo44, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) will once again take part in the national Clear the Shelters adoption event on Saturday, Aug. 17. In an effort to find more homes for shelter animals across the country, adoption fees will be waived for ALL adoptable animals at the AWLA during this epic adoption event.
“At the AWLA, we recognize that everyone who helps an animal in need is a superhero, and on Aug. 17, Clear the Shelters is going to be an event of heroic proportions!” said AWLA Chief Operating Officer Stella Hanly.
In 2018, 52 animals were adopted from the AWLA during Clear the Shelters, but in 2019, the AWLA will leap tall buildings and flex their heroic muscles to find homes for even more animals. As part of these efforts, the AWLA will open its doors an hour early, at 11 a.m., to accommodate the additional visitors who are racing faster than a speeding bullet to meet their new furry friends.
“Clear the Shelters is one of our favorite times to connect with members of our community who may not yet be familiar with the AWLA and showcase the wonderful pets we have available for adoption each and every day,” says Senior Manager of Adoptions and Community Programs Joanna Fortin.
But participants don’t need to adopt to be heroes. The AWLA will once again be offering the community the opportunity to make a pledge to Clear It Forward and help the shelter defray the lost adoption fees of the day. Ranging from $100 to $350, the AWLA’s adoption fees help to pay for food, medical care and behavioral support for the thousands of animals who come into the shelter each year. People who commit to Clear It Forward can pledge an amount for each animal adopted during Clear the Shelters or a fixed amount to support animals in need in the community. Pledges can be made now at AlexandriaAnimals.org/ClearItForward, and all adoptable animals and adoption tallies can be found on Aug. 17 at AlexandriaAnimals.org.
To make the event fun for the whole family, the AWLA will be hosting a tent with activities for superheroes of all ages, as well as a yard sale with discounted pet supplies, a bake sale with sweet treats and more. Donations from these events will benefit the shelter. And all participants are invited to don their best superhero gear as they visit the AWLA to meet their new best friend. Attendees should note that the waiting line for the event will be outdoors and to plan accordingly.
“You don’t need to have superpowers to help a homeless animal,” says Hanly. “Just join us on Aug. 17 or make a Clear It Forward donation online to help us Clear Our Shelter!”
