AWLA’s 2019 Howl-O-Ween Canine Costume Contest to Offer ‘Woofs on the Waterfront’ on Oct. 26
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Sept. 25, 2019) — The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) has announced a brand new waterfront location for its annual Howl-O-Ween canine costume contest, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. This year’s event will take place at Riverside Taco Company at 105 N. Union St., and will feature a canine cavalcade, offering attendees the chance to participate in up to three different costume events and win the titles of “Most Creative Costume,” “Best Homemade Costume” and “Best Human/Canine Combo Costume.” There will also be an opportunity to win “Fan Favorite Costume,” which will be based on audience votes.
Contestants can enter any of these individual contests or choose to enter all three. Registration for each title will be $25 and can include groups of up to two dogs and a handler. Registration is open now online, and contestants can also register on-site as long as the event categories are not yet full. During the event, contestants in each category will have the opportunity to strut their stuff across the center stage to show off their frightening finery, and winners will be chosen by a panel of canine experts, including AWLA’s COO Stella Hanly, Kim Gilliam of Frolick Dogs and Mary Kenkel of Whole Dogz. Participants can also purchase tickets onsite for $1 each to vote for their favorite costumed canine. Prizes will be provided by Frolick Dogs, Whole Dogz and other local businesses.
Non-registered attendees can also come to enjoy the festive pups at no cost, and purchase food and drinks from Riverside Taco Company. Fifteen percent of all food sales will go towards the AWLA to benefit animals in need.
This event will also launch the AWLA’s 2020 photo calendar and introduce Abby, the calendar’s cover model, as Alexandria’s Animal of 2020. Calendar entrants who attend Howl-O-Ween may pick up their complimentary copy of the calendar at the event, and calendars will also be available for purchase at the event for $15 or two for $20. Calendars can also be purchased at the AWLA for starting Oct. 28.
