Over 60 Years of News from Alexandria’s Animals

“Dear Friends of the League:

During this season of remembering the many kindnesses of the past year, we want to thank you for your help, through us, to animals…”

This is the opening letter of the December 1961 edition of The Animal Welfarer, a publication by the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. While so much has changed in the past 60 years, Alexandria’s love of animals has stayed constant, which is why we are pleased to share our Newsletter Archive, now available for digital viewing. While we do not have a complete collection of publications from our founding in 1946, our archive paints a picture of a community championing animal welfare and loving the animals with whom they share their neighborhoods and their homes.

The AWLA’s Newsletter Archive offers articles like “The ’93 Canine Games: An Olympic Success!” in the Fall 1993 Spotlight on Animals and information about “The Kindness Club” in the September 1969 edition of The Pet Gazette for Junior Members of the AWLA. Check out the Summer 1985 edition of The Petagram for “Choosing the Right Pet Food” or our 2019 Annual Review of the AWLA’s current newsletter Animal Welfare Matters for “AWLA Alumni Leading Lives of Adventure and Service.”

We encourage you to peruse news new and old to learn more about the work for animals our community has helped us do over the years and remember the many ways we have celebrated our love of animals through events, happy adoption stories and more. You can view our most recent newsletter, our 2019 Annual Review HERE or pick up a printed copy in our lobby when you next stop by the shelter, whether for an event, to visit with animals or to be part of the many other ways we continue to help animals in our community.
