In the coming days, the House of Representatives will be voting on the fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes language stating that the military will no longer be able to restrict which dogs are permitted in military housing based solely on breed (or appearance of breed). Currently, different branches of the military have different restrictions about which types of dogs are permitted to live on military bases and facilities, and since members of the the military often do not have a choice about where or when they move, this means that families faced with a move may also face the difficult choice of having to surrender a beloved pet.
The Senate has already passed its version of the NDAA, including this breed-neutral language. If this Act is passed by the House, it means that families will no longer be forced to give up pets based solely on how they look.
If you are interested in letting your Representative know how you feel about this new breed-neutral policy for military housing, please consider calling them to discuss their voting plans for the FY21 NDAA. You can find your local representative and a phone number by which to contact them HERE.
