4/20/16 at 7:00am: In the mornings, staff check on all of the animals and perform any necessary treatments. Here Laurie and Amber gently treat Rebel’s “happy tail”. He had lived in a small enclosure where his wagging tail hit the sides of the enclosure, injuring the end. He is doing better and now healing. Join us and donate today!
ABOUT AWLA
We help more than 2,000 animals every year. Each of these animals comes to us with unique needs: Some are very young, others are elderly, many are very sick/injured and most are alone and scared when they first arrive. Sadly, many arrive mourning an owner who has died or has become too sick to care for them or may have simply left them behind. We provide critical care to help them heal physically, mentally, and emotionally so they can have happier futures.
When possible and appropriate, we work to keep animals with their families with a range of services. For example, we provide assistance with behavior challenges, facilitate a low-cost spay/neuter program and operate”Animeals” with Senior Services of Alexandria to deliver pet supplies to homebound seniors with pets.
We rescue animals from and investigate cases of criminal animal abuse and neglect and present these cases to the Virginia’s Commonwealth and the City Attorney for prosecution.
We depend on generous individuals and companies throughout Alexandria who donate critical funding, in-kind services and over 12,000 hours of volunteer time each year, which allows us to change the lives of so many animals for the better. Thank you!
