Cold Weather Safety for Your Pet

Cold Weather Safety for Your PetAs temperatures start to drop and humans begin to layer on sweaters, scarves and winter boots, don’t forget your pets in mind when preparing for winter weather.

All animals react differently to cold weather, even those considered “cold-climate” animals, but with the proper preparation and care, everyone can enjoy the winter season!

Walks

In especially cold temperatures, consider shortening your usual walk with Snowball and walking during the warmest part of the day.  Watch out for slick spots or rough ice that might be harmful to paw pads, and before reentering your home, make sure to wipe off her paws so that ice melting chemicals on her paws or feet fur that might be licked off later.  If you use melting agents on for your sidewalk, consider pet-safe ice melt or sand.

A Second Coat?

Cold Weather Safety for Your PetEven though most pets have a coat of their own, they might enjoy layering up in chilly weather.  For animals who enjoy wearing clothes, sweaters, coats and booties can help protect them against the elements.  Make sure any clothing allows for a full range of motion and will not easily get snagged on anything your pet walks past.  For animals who prefer not to cover their personal coat, covered beds and warm blankets can help keep them cozy indoors all winter long.

Warning Signs

When you are out enjoying the season with Snowball, keep an eye out for warning signs that she might be getting too cold, such as trembling, sleepiness, slowed breathing and mobility issues.  If you are worried your pet might have become too cold, bring them indoors immediately and/or take them to your vet.

Our Wild Neighbors

Don’t forget that some of our wild neighbors might keep shelter under your car, so make sure to give them plenty of warning and time to get out from under your vehicle before driving away.  By making a little extra noise, they’ll know that’s their cue.
