Celebrating Senior Pets All Month Long!

November is Adopt a Senior Pet month, and at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, we can’t sing (or howl or chirp) the praises of senior animals enough.  Most senior animals have had experience living in households, which means they are often house-trained and understand how to live in a home environment.  Unlike youngsters, seniors tend to be calmer, though that doesn’t mean they won’t be up for a brisk walk in the autumn air.  Many seniors have learned tricks and training and love to show off their skills.  And of course, so many wonderful seniors make amazing cuddle companions.

Meet a few of the AWLA’s current Super Seniors, and learn why they are so spectacular:

Adoptable Angel is the hide-and-seek Champion Supreme.  This 10-year-old has figured out all the best hiding spots in her foster home but would love an event greater challenge in a new home…with a family of her own.  Angel’s adoption fees have already been paid, so if you think you have what it takes to help this champion flourish, contact us to learn more about scheduling time to meet her.

Elton John is a looker, a crooner and, most of all, a stealer of hearts.  With his big brown eyes, this 10-year-old American bulldog is a gentle giant, who’d much prefer lounging on the couch than racing around the dog park.  Oh, and did someone say treats?  Elton John says yes please!

Elton John’s adoption fees have already been paid by a generous donor, so learn more about adopting him today at AlexandriaAnimals.org/Adopt-By-Appointment.

Moxy‘s name may be bold, but this sweet senior much prefers the quiet, calm and cuddly life.  Moxy can be a bit shy at first and would prefer to lead the way in making new friendships, but she promises she’s worth the wait.  Her friends describe her as a super-snuggler with an adorable personality and equally adorable face; Moxy is the whole package.

Moxy is hanging out in an AWLA staff office, and a generous donor has already paid her adoption fee, so learn more about meeting Moxy at AlexandriaAnimals.org/Adopt-By-Appointment.

Pint-sized and ready to mingle: That’s Ken‘s take on life!  Ken was so excited for Halloween this year that he’s thinking of being a pumpkin all year long.  Whether this means he plans to wear his costume or just eat until he is pumpkin-shaped, we’re not sure yet!  At 12 years old, this Parson Russell terrier still has a lot to share with his friend, including the fact that they should be sharing their food with him.  His favorite activity may be snoozing, but he can be easily refocused with a gentle scratch on the special spot right under his ear!  And since Ken’s adoption fees have already been paid by a generous donor, he’s ready to take this show on the road all the way to his new home, so learn more about meeting him at AlexandriaAnimals.org/Adopt-By-Appointment.

10-year-old Tessie knows she’s beautiful, but she doesn’t let it go to her head.  An excellent conversationalist, Tessie loves to “chat” with her human friends all day long, catching up on topics from global politics to the types of birds in the backyard.  Tessie prefers to keep her own space but loves to while the evening away in the company of her favorite humans.  She’s lived with cats and dogs before, and, if pressed, thinks her ideal career would be Instagram model.

Thanks to a generous donor, Tessie’s adoption fees have already been paid, so contact us to learn more about meeting her in her foster home.

At 100+ pounds, Rey has a lot of love to give, which he prefers to dole out in the form of kisses, cuddles and putting his giant head in your lap for ear scratches.  This 8-year-old American bulldog mix is a social butterfly who is happy to introduce you to all the neighbors you never knew on your regular walks, and make a whole lot of new best friends in the process.  His grin is contagious, and you’ll find yourself smiling more just from being around him.

Rey is currently loving his time in a foster home but would like to settle down and make a commitment with a family to call his own.  And since his adoption fees have already been paid, he’s ready to make it official today.  Contact us to set up time to meet Rey in his foster home!

The adoption fees for each of these spectacular senior pets have already been pre-paid to help them find their homes even more quickly, and we have even more stellar seniors available for adoption everyday: Find them HERE.  And read more about some of our recently adopted senior animals and how they are living their best lives in their new homes in a blog from earlier this year HERE.
