BREAKING NEWS: AWLA Welcomes More Dogs Rescued from South Korean Meat Farm

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) has once again partnered with Humane Society International (HSI) to help find homes for dogs rescued from a dog meat farm in South Korea. The AWLA has taken seven dogs from HSI’s most recent rescue effort.

The dogs arrived at Dulles airport on December 14th. After a health check at the Washington Animal Rescue League, the AWLA picked the dogs up and brought them to the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter (which is operated by the AWLA) to have their health and behavior further evaluated. The dogs will become available for adoption in coming weeks.

“In January we were the first shelter to work with HSI to place dogs rescued from a South Korean meat farm. We believe it is important to be involved in these rescues” said Megan Webb, Executive Director of the ALWA. “These rescue efforts are instrumental in not only publicizing the deplorable dog meat farms in South Korea but also in highlighting the wonderful work of all the animal shelters in the DC area in finding homes for these dogs and other animals.” According to Webb, all of the shelters who participated in the January rescue reported that the media attention resulted in an increase in inquiries and adoptions.

“The January rescue effort was a tremendous success” said Webb. AWLA volunteer photographer Shelley Castle took photos the dogs arriving in January and has kept in touch with their adopters to document their transformation into happy, healthy pets. Castle was also on hand to document the seven dogs’ arrival on December 14th. Photos of both rescues are available from the AWLA.

Since the January rescue HSI has continued to work to close South Korean dog meat farms. Those rescue efforts involved HSI coordinating with animal shelters on the West Coast. The most recent rescue marks the return of the HSI rescue efforts to the East Coast.

Anyone interested in adopting a rescued dog should consult the AWLA’s website at AlexandriaAnimals.org and watch the AWLA’s Facebook page for updates.
