Ways to Support Alexandria’s Animals During COVID-19

Home / Ways to Support Alexandria’s Animals During COVID-19

We have received an outpouring of support from our community in past weeks asking how they can help the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and the animals and people we support during these unprecedented times. You can visit our page with ways to show your support any time of year to make a meaningful difference for animals in need, but as we move forward through this global pandemic and how it affects us locally, here are some ways you can lend a hand to those in need.

Make a Donation

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we have moved to a virtual adoption process; however, it means that we are able to adopt out a fewer number of animals to maintain safe physical distancing, which also limits our revenue.  In a time where there is an increased need of community programs across the city, your financial contribution is need now more than ever.  Learn more.

Support our Pet Pantry

Our Pet Pantry offers pet food and supplies to pet owners in need. As many of our neighbors fall on hard times during this pandemic, the Pet Pantry allows pets to stay in loving homes rather than having to be surrendered to our shelter. We keep our wishlist updated with what is currently needed the most, so your donations from that list go directly to families in our community.  View our wishlist.

Donations to our Shelter

For donors wishing to drop off items in-person, we have a donation cart located outside our front entrance Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.  We welcome most new or gently used pet supplies, including open bags of pet food or treats. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept animal or human prescription medications (other than flea, tick or heartworm preventatives), used litter boxes, used cat trees/scratchers, pillows, sheets/comforters, knit blankets, sleeping bags, styrofoam products, rugs/carpets, newspapers, plastic bags or human clothing.  There are receipts located on our donation cart that you can fill out to claim donations when you file your taxes. Directions.

On behalf of Alexandria’s animals, thank you for your support!
