Waggin’ Wheels is more than van — it’s a critical component of fulfilling our mission to serve all of Alexandria’s animals and the people who love them!
The AWLA received our state-of-art mobile veterinary and adoption vehicle — dubbed Waggin’ Wheels — in January 2021. Since then, Waggin’ Wheels has served many vital purposes for our organization — from off-site adoption and community health events to on-site animal surgeries. This vehicle is critical to our shelter’s operation! Check out the ways Waggin’ Wheels impacts the AWLA below:
- SURGERIES: Since our shelter does not have a surgical area inside the building, Waggin’ Wheels serves as our on-site, climate-controlled, fully-stocked surgical suite. Without Waggin’ Wheels, we would not be able to perform routine surgical procedures, like spays, neuters, dentals and more, for the animals in our care. Being able to perform these surgeries ourselves versus contracting with partner veterinarians saves us thousands of dollars every year!
- ADOPTIONS: We also use Waggin’ Wheels to attend off-site adoption events throughout our community. Waggin’ Wheels is equipped with animal kennels and slide-up panels for viewing, which is perfect for showcasing our adoptable cats and small mammals. The vehicle is totally climate controlled, which keeps our adoptables comfy and cozy while they wait to be adopted.
- COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Waggin’ Wheels accompanies us on many our community outreach events, including our monthly Pets & People Community Wellness Events, which provides free vaccines and other veterinary services to pets and pet parents. The vehicle transports all of our medical supplies, including those vaccines that need to be kept refrigerated until use. It also serves as a quiet and secure spot to vaccinate and care for cats and shy or scared dogs during these events.
