Veterinary care is important for all pets, not just dogs and cats.  That’s why, on Saturday, July 30, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria hosted a Community Wellness Event focused specifically on some of our smaller furry friends: rabbits and guinea pigs. 

Thank you so much!  This event was great and well organized.  Provider was sweet and explained what she was doing during the exam, which I liked.  Will definitely return if this event happens again.

Animal participants were given physical exams by the veterinary team at Ridge Lake Animal Hospital, who were looking into general health, diet and potential areas of concern.  Rabbits were also able to be microchipped, and the AWLA’s Pet Pantry provided pet supplies including food and hay, toys and other enrichment items.  Pawsh Dog Wash offered nail trims, and additional information was provided by the Friends of Rabbits rescue, the Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue and the Buddie Ford Nature Center.

It was a great experience.  Me and my kids were excited to come.  Our first free event because it could be pricey for our fur babies.

The veterinary team also provided pet owners with guidance on future care their pets might need, including the need for rabbit teeth trims, special diets and spay/neuter services.  Issues like these are just part of the reason that all pets, including guinea pigs and rabbits, can benefit from an annual vet check-up.

It was wonderful!  They took excellent care of our boys and relieved one of them of an odd tooth tie.

In total, 57 rabbits and guinea pigs received care through the July 30 Community Wellness Event; 14 rabbits received microchips for the first time, and bales-worth of Timothy hay were distributed to attendees.  For more information about bringing a rabbit or guinea pig into your family, visit our Adoption Page.

There aren’t any resources like this for many miles around so the opportunity to get my rabbit microchipped at all is fantastic!
