The Alexandria Shelter Walk for Homeless Animals
The Alexandria Shelter Walk for Homeless Animals
The second annual Alexandria Shelter Walk for Homeless Animals was a huge success. More than 400 participants and their canine companions joined us on October 20, 2013, helping to raise more than $39,000 for the homeless animals at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter. Thank you to all fundraisers, participants, and sponsors.
Join us next spring for the third annual Alexandria Shelter Walk for Homeless Animals and help us prevent pet overpopulation in Alexandria and throughout the region. Each year, the AWLA cares for thousands of animals at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter. Some are abused and neglected, and some are simply unwanted, but all deserve a second chance in a permanent, loving home.
The Walk raises critical funds to support the many AWLA programs that curb animal homelessness, promote responsible pet care, and match all types of shelter animals with loving adopters. It is the only walk to benefit Alexandria’s homeless animals and the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter.
Dogs are welcome and walkers are encouraged to bring their canine friends. We ask those with cats, small mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians to leave their companion animals at home, but hope you will join us and represent your companion animals. No species or breed is immune to homelessness and your participation helps support the AWLA’s fight for all animals that do not have a voice.
When will the Shelter Walk be held?
The third annual Shelter Walk will be moving to spring. Join us at Market Square on April 26, 2015. Check back here for more details.
Where is the Shelter Walk?
We will kick-off the Walk in front of City Hall at historic Market Square in the heart of Old Town. The Walk follows a 1.5 mile course through some of Old Town’s most scenic spots including Founders Park, the Torpedo Factory, our original cobblestone streets and, of course, King Street. Come with your four-legged canine companion and stroll the neighborhoods once walked by George Washington.
How can I get involved or register for the next Shelter Walk?
Online registration will open in early 2015.
