Shelter Snow-A-Thon this Weekend!

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is holding a Shelter Snow-A-Thon until  the departure of winter storm Jonas. AWLA staff are camped at the shelter for the entire duration of Jonas taking care of nearly 150 animals currently housed at the shelter.

“We have two dedicated Animal Care Attendants, Demetrius and Kathryn, who will remain at the shelter through the storm to insure all of our “residents” are safe and well taken care of ” said Megan Webb, Executive Director of the AWLA. “I encourage Alexandria residents to show their support for their hard work and dedication in the face of this winter storm and join them “virtually” through a financial pledge”.

“I would be at the shelter helping ” said AWLA supporter Gary Matz.”However, I can’t even leave my house so participating in this Shelter Snow-A-Thon is the next best thing and gives me a chance to thank them for all of their hard work.”

“Our work here at the shelter is even more important in light of the blizzard  conditions we are experiencing this weekend” said Webb.  Webb cited an example of the ALWA  being contacted by an Alexandria resident last night about 10:30.  According to Webb, “The individual was very worried because she had lost her 13 year old dog. We were able to respond immediately and determined we had him here!  She was so relieved. While she can’t pick the dog up until the storm is over – she now knows that her dog is safe and secure at the shelter.”

Webb encourages interested Alexandria residents to “virtually” join the AWLA staff  and participate in the Shelter Snow-A-Thon by pledging  a donation (such as $1 per hour)  to the AWLA for each hour that the AWLA staff remains at the shelter during winter storm Jonas.
