Crisis Care
Even the most dedicated pet owners have times when they are not able to care for their pet, and we want to provide you with options so when you’re ready, your pet can return to you. The AWLA’s Crisis Care program allows the AWLA to shelter and care for your pet during an emergency or crisis, so your pet can ultimately return to where they belong – with you!
Contact us at crisiscare@alexandriaanimals.org or 703-746-4774 to discuss how the AWLA can help you care for your pet for a limited window to give you the time you need to figure out your next steps.
Please note,
- There may be minimal associated costs for boarding and/or vaccinations as necessary; your AWLA representative can tell you more.
- The AWLA’s Crisis Care program is open to residents of the City of Alexandria.
- The Crisis Care program is designed to provide care for animals while their owners are experiencing a crisis such as hospitalization, homelessness, a house fire, etc. The AWLA does not offer boarding services outside of this program.
Veterinary Assistance
We understand that at times, pets experience medical emergencies and conditions that require care which pet owners may be unable to afford. As funding is available, the AWLA offers assistance to low-income Alexandria residents to help bridge this gap. For additional information about this program, please contact us at community@alexandriaanimals.org or 703-746-4774.
Pet owners can find additional resources for low-cost veterinary care and funding opportunities HERE. The Humane Society of the United States also offers a list of resources.
Grooming Assistance
Thanks to the generosity of our grooming business partners, the AWLA is able to offer a limited number of grooming appointments to senior and low-income pet owners in need each month. This program is intended to assist pet owners who cannot afford grooming services for their pet. City of Alexandria residents with an annual income below $50,000 are eligible, as are residents who receive assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Please note that grooming services are offered only for dogs and cats with hair coats that require regular trimming and/or grooming. This program does not offer bathing or brushing services for pets with short coats.
To confirm eligibility and availability of appointments, please contact us at community@alexandriaanimals.org or 703-746-5579.
Thanks to our grooming business partners, Pawsh Dog Wash and The Paw Spa LLC, for their generous donation of services to community members in need!
AniMeals
Through a partnership with Senior Services of Alexandria, the AWLA is proud to offer AniMeals, a program for eligible seniors to receive a monthly delivery of pet food to their residence at no cost. These monthly deliveries occur on the second Thursday of each month. City residents age 60 and over are eligible to participate in the program. To register, please contact Senior Services of Alexandria at 703-836-4414 ext. 113 or visit their website.
Pet Bereavement
Our pets are important members of the family. They are devoted companions who give us their unconditional love and acceptance. For a pet caregiver, the loss of a companion animal can be one of life’s most difficult experiences. When we lose a beloved friend, it often helps by sharing our feelings with others who have also experienced a similar loss. If you’ve lost a cherished pet and would like to speak with someone from a safe physical distance, phone hotlines and online chat options are available:
