WHO: All dogs 40+ pounds (and those just under)
WHAT: Red, White & Woof Adoption Event
WHEN: Saturday, July 5 – Sunday, July 13
WHERE: AWLA, 4101 Eisenhower Ave., Alexandria, VA 22304
Sadly, large breed dogs statistically have the longest stays in animal shelters across the country. This is also the case at the AWLA. While you may not have considered adopting a medium to large-sized pup, there can be many great benefits, including:
— Large dogs typically bark less than small breed dogs.
— Large dogs tend to have milder personalities, greater self-control, and higher tolerance for young children compared to small dogs.
— Some large dogs can make great companions for apartment dwellers. Not every large dog requires a ton of exercise.

Adoption hours are Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. and Monday through Friday (excluding Wednesday) from noon until 7 p.m. Our adoption staff will be ready to assist in the matchmaking process and help you find the dog of your dreams. Meet all of our available dogs here.
Thanks to our amazing fosters Joseph, Molly, Princess, Remmy, and Zoey are living their best lives out of the shelter. If you would like to meet them, please email us or call 703-746-4774 so we can arrange an in-person meeting.
Of course, there are many different kinds of animals available for adoption at the AWLA, including cats, small dogs, and small mammals, like rabbits and guinea pigs.
