Making Room for Animals in Need: Cat Topia Sponsors AWLA’s Cat Transfer Program

We are incredibly fortunate that the Alexandria community has a strong commitment to animal adoption, fostering, and animal welfare. This dedication to ensuring our four-legged friends are lovingly provided for means the AWLA rarely faces challenges related to animal overcrowding.

When we have extra space in our Cat Condos and Dog Dorms, as well as the financial resources to welcome animals from other areas, we turn to our rescue and shelter partners in Virginia and across the U.S. and offer to transport some of their animals to our facility.

These partner organizations are in rural and under-resourced communities where they often face heartbreaking decisions due to animal overcrowding. Animal transports provide a much-needed lifeline for animals who might not otherwise have a chance at finding a home.

Through our robust animal transfer program, we bring in more than 500 animals every year, giving them a second lease on life and a chance to find a home in the DMV. Many of those animals are cats and kittens from southwestern Virginia.

Cat Transfer Program Sponsored by Cat Topia

At least twice a month, our dedicated volunteers head out in our trusty transport van to pick up cats in need. These trips, often several hours each way, are a true labor of love and dedication.

Once the cats and kittens arrive at the AWLA, they are carefully evaluated by our expert medical team. Each animal receives a thorough check-up and any veterinary care they may need, from vaccinations to spay/neuter surgeries. Within days, many are ready to meet potential adopters in our Cat Adoption Room. Most don’t have to wait long after moving into our Cat Adoption Room – sometimes just hours – before a loving family takes them home.

We are excited to announce that these cat transports have been generously sponsored by Cat Topia! Cat Topia’s support will make it possible for hundreds of cats and kittens to safely make the lifesaving trip this year. Sponsorships like these are vital – they help cover the cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, and other expenses that might otherwise limit how many animals we could transfer in.

The AWLA’s transfer program creates hope and acts as a lifeline for animals and shelters in other communities. With community support and sponsorships like those from Cat Topia, we can continue to grow this program and keep making a difference for animals across the state and beyond!
