On September 12, a wild beaver attacked a person and a dog in Ben Brenman Park. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the beaver or any other wildlife in the park has been affected by rabies. However, wild animals can carry rabies, so do not feed or approach any wild, stray or feral animal, even if it appears friendly or injured. Make sure your dogs and cats are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations, and remember that dogs must be on a leash in all public areas, except those designated as dog parks.
To report a danger from a wild animal, please call Animal Services at 703.746.4774 (after hours: 703.746.4444). Visit the Alexandria Health Department Rabies page for more information about rabies.
