Every dog is different, but all dogs need some kind of activity to keep them happy and enriched throughout the day. Dogs who are bored may bark, chew or even become destructive, but there are a variety of activities and exercises that you can offer your pup to help keep them happy and entertained all day long. Please check with your veterinarian to ensure the following activities are safe and healthy for your dog.
Energetic dogs might be likely to get up to mischief during their time alone, but a pet who has gotten extra exercise – whether a longer walk, additional runs around the yard or time in a dog park – may be too tired to get up to negative behavior.
There are a variety of puzzles and interactive toys that can keep your pet busy when they are home along. These can be food-based, such as puzzle feeders, treat holders or frozen Kongs, or toys that move or make sounds that will prompt your pup to play with it.
Some dogs prefer to be around other dogs or people. Consider daytime boarding/daycare for your pet or midday exercise breaks from a dogwalker or friend.
Dogs may bark for a variety of reasons, but there are just as many ways to train them not to bark. Check with a professional dog trainer who practices positive reinforcement techniques on ways to stop your dog from barking.
The great outdoors is a treasure trove of smells, sights and adventures for your dog; it’s no wonder they might bark when they see something extra-fun. When your pet is outside, make sure you are supervising them; not only is it safer, but you’ll be on hand to address barking behavior when it starts.
