Getting Ready for Spring Babies!

Raccoon babyLast Thursday, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria hosted the second event in our brand new speaker series to help our community learn about the baby wildlife they might be seeing in their backyards this spring.

AWLA Animal Services Officers Boyd and Doran spoke about the variety of wild animals that will be having babies in Alexandria in the coming months, including foxes, rabbits, opossums, squirrels, raccoons, birds and more. They also shared some tips and tricks from their own experiences around the city trying to help lost or injured babies (did you know that a momma squirrel will come rescue a baby if you play a squirrel call on your phone?!?), and of course some advice on how you can help animals babies in your community – including sometimes just leaving them alone! If you missed it or just want to refresh your memory, you can find more below.

But wild babies aren’t the only ones we’ll be seeing this spring. AWLA’s Community Outreach and Adoptions Coordinator Echo Keif talked about our upcoming Kitten Season, when a flood of newborn kittens will start to trickle through the doors of the AWLA, as well as how we care for these babies (and sometimes their moms) and how you can help. Check out her useful tips, as well as a boatload of adorable kitten pictures, below.

And in case you haven’t heard, Kitten Season is officially underway, as new momma cat Naomi just brought five babies into the world this past week. Welcome Bismuth, Geode, Opal, Ruby and Sapphire! Naomi and her babies are headed to foster for some extra TLC, but check out these kitten cuties.

Our next speaker series presentation was the most requested via a Facebook poll, so please join the AWLA’s Executive Director Megan Webb on Thursday, April 19, at 7 p.m. for our next event, Careers in Animal Welfare. This event is free but space is limited, so register today!
