Junior Volunteer FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
We’re excited to welcome a new group of volunteers to join our team and learn more about helping animals across the community. You can read more about our Junior Volunteer program and register HERE.
If this semester’s Junior Volunteer program is full, we will have more information about the next semester in the coming months.
How old do youth have to be to participate in the program?
All students need to be between 14 to 17 years of age. Students who are about to turn 18 within 6 months may wish to wait and attend our adult volunteer information session. Information about our adult volunteer program can be found HERE.
When will your next Junior Volunteer sessions be held?
The program will be offered twice a year, during the Fall and Spring semesters. Registration occurs one to two months prior to the start of our Junior Volunteer Program sessions. We will announce registration opening by email and on our social media accounts. We encourage you to sign up to receive emails about our latest youth volunteering opportunities, click below to sign up for notifications.
What if I miss a training session?
We require Junior Volunteers to attend all of the sessions for their scheduled program. We will do their best to accommodate scheduling conflicts with advance notice and offer several in-person training sessions. Please email youthprograms@alexandriaanimals.org if you have a conflict with any of the scheduled sessions prior to registering.
What happens after the program has been completed?
After Junior Volunteers successfully complete all training sessions in their program, they will be able to come back to the AWLA to volunteer independently. Junior Volunteers will be able to volunteer as often as they like during Junior Volunteer hours and based on pre-scheduled shifts coordinated by our Humane Educator. Junior Volunteer shifts will be available seven days a week and are based on staff availability.
Junior Volunteers will have the opportunity to schedule volunteer shifts at the AWLA, in the community, and from home. Volunteer assignments include working directly with our animals, assisting with humane education programs, and participating in community events.
We ask Junior Volunteers to commit to at least four hours of regularly scheduled volunteering per month.
When are Junior Volunteer shifts available?
Junior Volunteer shifts must be scheduled in advance with our Youth Program Coordinator and are available during the following times:
Saturday and Sunday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday to Friday: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Shifts can be scheduled for one to two hours at a time.
Can parents or guardians volunteer with their Junior Volunteer?
We have an adult volunteer program for parents and guardians who would like to volunteer at the AWLA. Information about our adult volunteer program can be found HERE.
