COVID-19 Update – Open for Business but Closing Our Doors
To make sure we are exercising an abundance of caution to keep our community safe, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will be closing our doors beginning Tuesday, March 17, but we will still be open for business. What does this mean for our guests?
-
- Animals are still available for adoption, but you must make an appointment to meet with and adopt a pet. You can email us at info@alexandriaanimals.org to make that appointment or ask any questions about any of our adoptable animals.
- If you currently have a hold on an adoptable animal, we are honoring that hold. We will follow up with you to schedule a time for your adoption consultation and to complete the adoption process.
- If you need to surrender an animal, you can do so by emailing info@alexandriaanimals.org to make an appointment. As we mentioned this weekend, because we anticipate decreased adoptions in the coming weeks, we are asking you to consider surrendering over the next two weeks only in cases of emergency, to make sure we have enough room for all the animals here at the shelter. If you need behavioral support or pet supplies in the meantime, please contact us to see how we can help.
- If you need to license your pet, you can do so online or via mail — read more HERE. But if you must license your pet in person, or have any other business with the AWLA, we ask that you make an appointment in advance by emailing info@alexandriaanimals.org.
As we mentioned this weekend, all public events are canceled/postponed while the ACPS schools are suspended, currently scheduled through April 13. We will let you know when we are safely able to return to business as normal.
In the meantime, our dedicated staff and volunteers will still be hard at work keeping the animals in our care clean and healthy and keeping our facility safe for scheduled visitors. We are also committed to making sure our staff is staying healthy and being fairly treated, which is why we will still be paying all of our staff, whether we are open for business or not. If you’d like to help us make sure we can do this — even while we are not bringing in funds from adoptions and events — then please consider making a donation so we can continue to provide the best care to all the animals at the AWLA.
