Kitten

Springtime means flowers, warm weather and…baby kittens.

The League has already welcomed several litters of kittens, and we know that more are on the way. As we gear up for “kitten season,” we need to stock our shelves with our own special kitten layette. Donations of the following items are greatly appreciated:

  • Kitten-sized baby bottles and nipples
  • Washable fleece blankets
  • Kitten Milk Replacement (KMR)—We prefer canned over powdered
  • Esbilac puppy milk replacement—again, canned over powdered
  • SnuggleSafe heating disks
  • The Grrreat Wall Pet Corral
  • The Veterinary Drug Handbook, (latest edition possible), by Donald C. Plumb

Many of these items are available at larger pet supply stores. Our newborns thank you!

Puppy

Six special pets are celebrating their birthday in April. Our warmest birthday wishes go out to:
Ollie Cat – April 1st
Grey Kitty – April 1st
Rhett – April 1st
Fat Face – April 1st
Chunkweena – April 16th
Jack Benny – April 17th

Any pet can join our Birthday Club! To help celebrate that special day, each Birthday Club pet receives a card from Chewie, the League mascot, recognition in our E-Newsletter and in the Shelter lobby. Best of all, lifetime membership is only $10 and proceeds help the League find homes for Shelter animals so that they can also enjoy the good life with a family that cares. To enroll, click here.

Monthly Giving and Donation Program

Your generosity can help the League to care for thousands of animals at the Shelter each year, find them permanent homes, extend outreach services into the community, and educate youth and adults about being part of the solution. By choosing either a one-time donation or an ongoing monthly gift, you can help us help the animals in our care and in our community. Simply click on the "Donate Now" button at the end of this newsletter or on our website at www.alexandriaanimals.org to make a contribution.

Lola and Lulu
A Purr-fect Pair

These feline sisters are looking for a home where they can bring double the love to their new adopters. Lola is a lovely calico cat who loves to play with toys, sit in sun beams and have her belly scratched, once she gets to know you. Her sister Lulu has a shiny black and white coat and an outgoing personality.

Lola

This pair was brought to the League back in October and have been patiently waiting for that “special someone” to bring them home. Lola and Lulu are great friends and keep each other excellent company. At four years old, they are mature enough to enjoy a good snooze on the sofa, but young enough to keep their adopter busy with kitty games of chase.

Come and visit this charming duo, and don’t forget to give them a few extra chin scratches!

Lulu

Visit www.alexandriaanimals.org to view more animals available for adoption or stop by the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, located at 4101 Eisenhower Ave., for a personal visit with our adoptable animal friends.

Dog Bite Prevention Seminar

May 17-23 is Dog Bite Prevention Week, and an excellent time to speak with children about safe ways to meet and interact with dogs. The League will welcome Pam Nasham on May 16 at 11 a.m. for a seminar on dog handling and bite prevention. Pam is one of the talented trainers at All About Dogs Training Center in Woodbridge. She has 10 years of experience helping children interact and handle a variety of animals—even exotic birds!

No reservations needed. Although this event is about dogs, we ask that you leave your canine companions at home.

To be added to our email list, please send an email to staff@alexandriaanimals.org.

New Annual Sponsors

Many thanks to our newest annual sponsors: the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites and Kingsview Animal Hospital.

Holiday Inn Logo

The Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites is a long-time supporter of the AWLA and will again host the League’s Annual Dinner this upcoming October. Located on First Street, the hotel always helps us to organize fun and memorable evenings to celebrate our staff, volunteers and supporters.

Once again in October 2009, we will recognize the League’s accomplishments and remember our furry friends in the Holiday Inn’s welcoming space. Sincere thanks to the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites for “sheltering” us on this special night.

A second round of thanks goes to Kingsview Animal Hospital who has also made an annual sponsorship pledge to the League. The staff members at Kingsview Animal Hospital know that pets hold a special place in everyone’s heart and deserve the best possible care. Our sincere gratitude goes out to Kingsview Animal Hospital for their support of the League, and for the care they provide to pets!

The AWLA extends continuing thanks to our other annual sponsors: Alexandria Animal Hospital and Olde Towne School for Dogs.
