A Lousiana Family!
03/27/2006

A Lousiana Family!Last November one of our staff members took a trip down to Louisiana do rescue some of the “Katrina Dogs” and bring them back here to Alexandria to find new homes. One of the dogs that came back was a boxer named Lola. Unbeknownst to us, she was pregnant and had two little boys in her kennel, all on her own, just a few days after arriving. Lola and the puppies were quickly moved into one of the shelter’s office spaces so that the puppies would have the best chance to thrive. The puppies were named Cajun and Beignet after their Louisianan heritage. Both puppies lived here in the warmth of our administrative office for 8 weeks until they were ready to be separated from their mother and put into our adoption program. Boy, were they ready! Cajun and Beignet were very independent at this point and Lola, just 9 months herself, was ready to move and finish living out her own puppy years without the stress of motherhood. Cajun, renamed Storm in his new home, was the first to go and is happily living in his new home, watching the Tyra Banks show with his new owners and a great pal to their young son. The new family could do nothing but gush about how wonderful he is and how he is growing up to be such a nice dog. One day when mom had to stay home sick, Storm spent the whole day in bed with her. What a sensitive boy he is! Storm also has a playful side, which saw him tumble down the stairs once or twice before he got his legs totally under control, but is great for playing with the family. Despite his rough start to life, Cajun has never been without love and is blossoming into a great dog! ** Lola was adopted just a few days later and is happily settled into her new home. Beignet, now “Ben” is still here at the shelter undergoing physical therapy for a birth defect in his hips.
