Mina and Me
11/26/2008
I wanted to tell you about Lady who we adopted in early 1996. Please feel free to include this in your "Adoption Stories" if you like.
"We adopted Lady (known in your shelter as MINA) in early 1996. Our 11 yr. old mutt had died in Dec 1995, and in Jan 1996 our other mutt was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) with metastasis (spread) to his lungs. We adopted Lady because we wanted a second dog to give 'a second chance to' and knew that the death of our remaining dog was imminent. Lady was something of a 'hard luck case.' She had been turned over to your organization after being kept in a garage with her puppies. Lady was thought to be a German Shepherd/Lab mix. The cute puppies were quickly adopted, but no one wanted Lady. Finally, Lady was adopted by a family, but was returned after a few months because she became 'possessive of her children's toys' when other children came into the yard or picked up the toys.
We adopted Lady because she was sweet, smart, needed a home, and my husband had experience with German Shepherds. She quickly became "Our Lady of Alexandria." Our love for Lady grew every day. She was so loving and supportive when we had to put our mutt with bone cancer down. My husband worked out of the house, so Lady was his constant companion. In 2000, when Lady was 6 years old, my husband passed away after a 9 month illness. Lady was there by my side every night when I came home from the hospital. Without Lady, the compassionate, loving, understanding, and supportive shelter dog from the Animal Welfare League, those 9 months would have been much worse for me.
In 2004, Lady and I moved to NY state, where we began a new life: I as a college professor and Lady as the senior dog. She has 2 other rescue dogs as brother & sister: a pure-bred GSD and a Yellow Lab. They have been 'the 3 rescue muscateers' for the last 4 years.
Lady, now age 14 years (she was born in October 1994) was recently diagnosed to be in renal and hepatic failure (kidney & liver). I am keeping her comfortable now, but she will probably need to be put down soon if she stops responding to treatment. She has had a long and very good life since she joined our family.
I just wanted to write and THANK the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, VA, for giving us the best dog and the best friend we could have ever hoped for. I cannot thank you enough for OUR LADY.
Sincerely,
Colonel (Dr.) Beth Scannell-Desch, USAF (ret)
