Pooch Pooch was only 5 months old when this photo was taken in his foster home. He has ALREADY BEEN ADOPTED but is here to let you know that we are looking for dedicated, energetic and patient FOSTER PARENTS to care for underage and underweight puppies and kittens as well as animals recovering from illness, surgery or help with behavioral issues. We need FOSTER PARENTS to provide them with a warm, friendly place to live until they can be considered for adoption. FOSTER PARENTS will care for animals in their own homes on a temporary basis. Parents will feed, socialize, administer medication, groom and train foster animals according to the guidelines set forth by the League. The time commitment may range from a few days to several weeks, from a few hours a day to round-the-clock care, depending upon the age and situation of each fosterling. The League will provide you with the training and supplies that you and your young charges require. You provide the tender loving care and attention these fosterlings crave. Fostering a young animal can be hard work. It can be difficult, frustrating, and sometimes heartbreaking. It is also one of the most rewarding experiences an animal lover can have. Fostering saves lives! If you are interested in becoming a FOSTER PARENT for the League, please contact Diann Hohenthaner, Foster Program Coordinator at 703/746-5583 or dhohenthaner@alexandriaanimals.org.

Arturo Arturo may be in his golden years, but he’s definitely not ready to pack it in and move to Florida. This 9-year-old Dachshund is amusingly playful and full of energy. Arturo was surrendered to the shelter by his previous owner, and although he was shy at first, he’s quickly warming up to the staff and volunteers. This calm and relaxed dog is always wagging his tail and he seems to be at his happiest when he’s around people. He's super friendly to everyone and will make a wonderful companion for his new owner. We consider Arturo to be a “level 2” dog and recommend that his adopter have previous dog experience. We require that he go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old.

Chelita Chelita is surely one-of-a-kind! This blue-eyed/brown-eyed sweetheart has captured the hearts of many here at the shelter. A 6-year-old Jack Russell terrier, Chelita was surrendered by her owner simply because they didn’t want her anymore. She’s been a little stressed out in her new environment, but she seems to really enjoy being around the staff. Chelita is curious by nature and she likes sniffing around the play yard and engaging in an occasional game of fetch with a tennis ball. We consider Chelita to be a “level 2” dog and recommend that her adopter have dog experience. Her previous owner left her in the yard during the day then let her have free run of the house, so she may not be house trained. Ask us about crate training an adult dog. We know that Chelita will be much happier if given the chance to succeed! Although she has lived well with small children in the past, we require that Chelita go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old since we haven’t seen her interact with kids.

We consider them to be “level 1” dogs and think they’ll be appropriate for owners of any experience level. Because they are so energetic, we require that they go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old. Ask us about Charm School. Eon With an uncanny resemblance to the cowardly lion on the Wizard of Oz, Eon is a unique mix of canine! This 1-year-old Chow Chow mix was surrendered to the shelter because his owner no longer had time to care for him. It didn’t take us very long to discover that Eon is goofy and loving. He adores people and will shower them with kisses to prove it. Eon also loves playing with all kinds of toys, so he’s easily entertained! We consider him to be a “level 1” dog and think he’ll be great with owners of any experience level. We recommend that he go to a home where the children are 8 years of age or older.

Fraggle Fraggle rocks! This 2-year-old powder puff Chinese Crested beauty is friendly and low-key. He was surrendered by his previous owner because of some housetraining difficulties, so we recommend that his adopter use crate training with him. Fraggle has shown a lot of stress in the shelter so we don’t think we’ve seen his full personality yet. He has definitely had his social moments with the staff, but at times he prefers to be alone. Because he’s sensitive, we recommend that he go to a home that’s settled and calm. We consider Fraggle to be a “level 2” dog and recommend that his adopter have previous dog experience. We require that he go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old since he has had some issues with resource guarding. Ask us about Charm School. It’s included in your adoption fee and a great way to bond with Fraggle and work on his education!

Laurel Laurel the explorer does her best to take in all the sounds and sights around her. This 2-year-old Australian Cattle dog mix came to us from an out-of-state shelter. Laurel gets along with pretty much everyone and she seems to be very agreeable. She’s an outdoorsy dog who would love to take long hikes and explore new places with her adopter. She likes to be active and entertained! We consider Laurel to be a “level 1” dog and think she’d be appropriate for an adopter of any experience level. We think she will be good with kids of any age.

Lilac While lilacs are notorious for only blooming for a few weeks in the spring, Lilac the puppy can offer year-round joy to a new adopter! This 8-month-old English Pointer mix was brought to us by a rural rescue group. Lilac can be a lot of fun, especially when she’s romping with her canine playmates. She plays gently and loves food, so her willingness to work for it will help out a great deal with her training. While she may not have had much of an opportunity to walk on a leash and live a normal life with a family in the past, she seems to embrace change pretty well. To make the adjustment even easier, we’re working with her to help alleviate some of her fear of new people and situations. Daily exercise and obedience training may be the ticket to ensuring that she’s a well-adjusted, happy girl. Lilac already knows how to “sit” on command and she’ll probably learn other tricks very quickly. We consider her to be a “level 2” dog and recommend that her adopter have previous dog experience. We are recommending that Lilac go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old.

Yena With her pleading, soft eyes, it’s hard to say no to a dog like Yena. This 1.5-year-old Pit Bull mix was surrendered by her owner because their neighborhood rules prohibit the breed. Yena is a little shy and nervous about being in the shelter, but she’s also about as sweet as can be. Yena seems eager to please and she plays nicely with toys and people. She also likes spending time with other dogs and she prances around with them happily in the play yard. Because she loves food, we think Yena will be a fun and easy dog to train. We consider her to be a “level 1” dog and think she’ll be appropriate for owners of any experience level. We are recommending that she go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old. She can get a little physical when she plays but she calms down quickly. She has lived with children over 8 before.

Charlie Pretty much an all-around good dog, Charlie has been a joy ever since he came to the shelter. This 5-year-old Poodle/Maltese mix was surrendered to us because his family decided that they didn’t want to take care of a dog anymore. It’s hard to believe that someone would give up a dog like Charlie. He’s polite, friendly, and easygoing. He seems good with other dogs and he’s good on a leash. Charlie loves to receive affection and he likes to play. Need we say more? We consider Charlie to be a “level 2” dog and recommend that his owner have previous dog experience. We require that he go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old. Although he previously lived with an 8-year-old and 16-year-old, we haven’t seen him around younger kids, so we don’t know how he will react.

Bibi Always sporting a smile, Bibi is a super friendly, happy girl. This 5-year-old Beagle was surrendered by her owner because they were moving and couldn’t take her with them. When Bibi came to the shelter, she had a cold and wasn’t feeling well. But now that she’s much better, she has become very social and outgoing! Bibi has approached many people here and her tail is always wagging. She also has a canine buddy who she likes to hang out with. In fact, we think Bibi would make an excellent second dog. She really shows her spirit and happiness with people and animals around her. We consider Bibi to be a “level 2” dog and recommend that her new family have dog experience. She has been scared of some men in the past, so ask the Adoptions desk how to help her overcome her fear.

Kalie “Roly poly” is the best way to describe Kalie! This friendly, chubby little dog has a great attitude. Kalie is a 5-year-old Chihuahua was surrendered to the shelter because her owner could no longer keep her. Unlike some Chihuahuas, Kalie is extremely approachable and considers everyone to be her friend! She’s always wagging her tail and up for a good cuddle session. Because Kalie is a bit overweight, she’ll have to go on a weight loss plan. We consider Kalie to be a “level 1” dog and think she’ll be appropriate for owners of any experience level. Since she has such a happy and friendly personality, we think she will make a great fit for any family. We recommend that she go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old.

Piglet Piglet is as sweet as her namesake on Winnie the Pooh! This 9-month-old Boxer/Pit Bull mix was surrendered to the shelter by her previous owner because she didn’t get along with another dog in the house. So far at the shelter, Piglet has shown that she’s a very social, well-adjusted puppy. She loves people and displays a nice balance between playfulness and calmness. Piglet is also surprisingly gentle. She loves to receive affection and she makes whoever is petting her the center of her world. We consider Piglet to be a “level 1” dog and think she’ll be appropriate for owners of any experience level. We require that she go to a home with children at least 8 years old.

Sangria Sangria is a very bashful 3-year-old Beagle who has had a difficult time coming out of her shell. She was surrendered to the shelter by her previous owner because they could no longer keep her. Sangria is currently in our Paws in Progress program and the staff is working with her on her shyness. While she’s not yet up for adoption, you are still encouraged to come in and fill out an application for her.

Besos Outgoing and constantly on the move, Besos is a friendly puppy with a lot of energy! This 8-month-old Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull mix was brought to us from the Warren County animal shelter. So far, she has been very social and has snuggled up to one of our staff members. Although she’s a little stressed in the shelter, we’ve found that she loves playing with other dogs, especially her shelter buddy, Gray, who adores her. We think Besos has a lot of potential. She tends to keep all four paws on the floor, sit for attention, and is motivated by food! All of this adds up to a fun dog to train. We consider Besos to be a “level 1” dog and think she’ll be appropriate for owners of any experience level. We are requiring that she go to a home where the children are 8 years and older.

Ash Ash is one of the most gentle, mellow dogs we’ve seen in awhile! This 7-year-old Collie mix was brought to the shelter because his owner was allergic. Ash is the sweetest boy. He’s laid-back, trusting, and friendly with everyone he meets. He's also good on a leash, housebroken, and sociable. We consider Ash to be a “level 1” dog and think he’ll be appropriate for owners of any experience level. We recommend that he go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old since he’s not a huge fan of hugs. Ash recently had a cracked dew claw which was removed, so his foot is in the process of healing.

B. A. Baracas Single, fit, and ready to explore the world! Meet B.A. Baracas. This 9-month-old dog (who we think is either a Staffordshire Terrier or a Pit Bull mix) was returned to the shelter by an adopter because they were moving and could no longer keep him. Full of energy and extremely playful, Baracus loves people and other dogs. However, he is always jumping up on people, kind of like the canine version of Tigger. Because he tends to get very physical when he plays and has a ton of energy, he’ll need to have an adopter who is willing to give him plenty of exercise and obedience. He already understands “sit” but we know that he can learn so much more. We consider Baracas to be a “level 2” dog and recommend that his owner have previous dog experience. We require that he go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old since he is so jumpy and excitable. We highly recommend Charm School as a great way to continue Baracas’ education. It’s fun and included in your adoption fee!

Daisy Daisy is at her happiest when she’s in the play yard, taking in fresh air and exploring her surroundings! This 7-year-old American Foxhound was surrendered to the shelter because her owner was evicted from their home. Friendly and good-natured, Daisy enjoys engaging with new people and receiving affection, so we think she’ll make a great companion and play buddy. While she gets excited easily, especially when she’s playing, she’s also quick to calm down. We consider Daisy to be a “level 1” dog and think she’ll be appropriate for owners of any experience level. Daisy has lived with a baby and young children in the past, but we recommend that she go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old since she can be a little physical when she plays.

Karma Karma always comes back ten-fold, and if you’re lucky, this dog may just improve yours. Karma is a 6-month-old Shar Pei/Labrador mix who was brought to us from the Warren County animal shelter. She’s a very playful, sweet dog who seems to enjoy laps and toys. While she has been social with us, we think she’ll need some extra help in overcoming her fears. Luckily, she’s very motivated by food so she should be fun to train. She picked up “sit” in just a few minutes and immediately understood that doing something equals treats! We consider Karma to be a “level 2” dog and recommend that her adopter have previous dog experience. We also require that she go to a home where the children are at least 8 years and older. Karma is young and still somewhat impressionable. We urge her new family to decide what manners they’d like her to have and then consistently train her. Ask us about Charm School. It’s a great way to get started teaching Karma manners and it’s included in the price of adoption.
