Pepe: A little dog who beat the odds

Pepe is an 8 year old male Chihuahua who was brought to us as a stray. Pepe was having a rough time: He could not walk and needed assistance to stand. His right eye was extremely swollen and so painful that Pepe didn’t want anyone to touch him. Our staff hated to see him in so much pain, and we set about figuring out what was going on with Pepe.

Our friends at Paws, Purrs, and Exotics Animal Hospital diagnosed Pepe with intervertebral disc disease and, with medication, he made great strides. He was able to stand on his own, and even walk on a leash! A veterinary ophthalmologist at VCA SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Center found that Pepe had a deep corneal ulcer with a partial rupture in his right eye. With treatment, his corneal ulcer has healed completely and he’s no longer in pain. Now that his major veterinary issues have been resolved, and he’s been neutered and had a much-needed dental cleaning, he’s ready for the next chapter of his life to begin. He’s looking for his new home!
