About the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria
Helping Animals, Supporting Community
Since 1946, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria has been a resource for our community and a shelter for homeless animals. Through adoptions, spay and neuter assistance, education and community service and outreach, the League plays a key role in promoting responsible pet care across Northern Virginia. The League has contracted with the City of Alexandria to provide animal care, control and sheltering services since 1989. As part of our contract with the City, we operate the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility accepting any and all animals brought to us. We have made a commitment that if an animal is in need, we will provide the care that every animal so richly deserves.
We place more than 1,300 companion animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, iguanas, chinchillas and many more, in permanent, loving homes each year. An additional 300 stray pets are reunited with their owners through the League annually. Our specially-trained staff also assist area wildlife that have been injured or are in distress—with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat or transferring them to licensed wildlife rehabilitators for care and eventual release.
The League has a vibrant volunteer corps of 200 animal lovers who support our 40+ full and part-time professional staff. In everything we do, League staff and volunteers demonstrate that love and compassion are just as important as food and water for the animals in our care.

Vola Lawson Leadership Society

Pawsitive Impact Circle
Consider joining the League’s Pawsitive Impact Circle (PIC). As a PIC member, you will be recognized as one of the League’s philanthropic leaders—helping thousands of homeless animals each year. The significant support provided by the League’s PIC members enables us to provide high-quality care to our resident companion animals and many of the services needed in our pet-loving community.
PIC membership is based on annual donations calculated according to the calendar year. Anyone contributing more than $500 in one calendar year earns PIC membership for that year along with a variety of benefits according to their donor level. Benefits include an invitation to our annual PIC reception and behind-the-scenes shelter tour held each spring along with invitations to other League seminars and events.
What Can Each Gift Mean?
Unrestricted gifts to the AWLA enable us to provide the daily care and attention that each of our residents need. Following are just a few of the ways that donations help the companion animals in our care.
$500 can pay for a desperately-needed dental cleaning for one of our dogs or cats. Often, pets arrive at the shelter having had no previous medical attention. Dental cleanings are critical to help animals avoid serious infections and chronic pain.
$1,000 can pay for two dogs to receive life-saving heartworm treatment.
$1,500 helps to cover the surgery and rehabilitation a dog or cat needs after suffering a severe trauma (such as being hit by a car). Many times, amputation is the best option for victims of traumatic accidents. Through surgery and rehabilitation, the League can offer many of these animals a second chance for a long, happy life with new adopters.
$2,500 can purchase five cat condos for our adoptions area.
$5,000 helps to cover the sterilization and microchipping of all adoptable dogs for one month.
$10,000 helps to microchip three-fourths of the animals adopted through the League in one calendar year.
These are just a few ways your donation helps our animals. If you would like more information about the Pawsitive Impact Circle, please contact Diana Cole, our Development Associate at dcole@alexandriaanimals.org or 703.746.5651.

The Vola Lawson Leadership Society is made up of major gift donors who have given $500.00 or more during a calendar year. Thanks to Leadership Society members, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is able to provide the highest levels of shelter and care to animals in need, while promoting adoptions of companion animals and humane education in the Alexandria community.

In addition to cash donations, the Leadership Society also includes Volunteers who have given a high number of volunteer hours. Many volunteers go above and beyond for the Shelter. We also include as members business partners who have provided care to our shelter animals. Many animal care providers and veterinary establishments provide support to shelter animals with special needs that we would not otherwise be able to give. We thank all donors, volunteers, and partners.

The Vola Lawson Leadership Society, formerly called the PAWSitive Impact Circle (PIC), was named to honor the Shelter’s namesake who passed away in December 2013. Her leadership was instrumental in establishing a modern and progressive animal shelter for the City of Alexandria. Members are true leaders as well, following Vola’s example, and such a distinguished group is worthy of such a designation.

Members will receive a special lapel pin, an invitation to an annual reception, and invitations to exclusive Society member events throughout the year.
