Hoarded Rabbits Find New Homes Following Abuse Conviction

In January 2015, 176 rabbits were confiscated from an empty lot behind a Brooklyn, New York tire shop. An ASPCA vet examination revealed that more than two-thirds of them had bite wounds and other injuries. Thirty-three animals had sustained genital trauma, and roughly half tested positive for disease. Others had abscesses, skin inflammations, fever or lameness.

Despite every effort to provide sufficient care, nine animals perished. The rest were transferred by ASPCA to partnering shelters, including the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, who took in 33 rabbits over a two-year period, and expect to receive more.

Recently, the hoarder was convicted of 100 counts of misdemeanor animal abuse.

Meet Calix

As for the rabbits, there is currently one, named Calix, waiting for adoption at the shelter. Calix is a little shy, but with some fresh parsley becomes friendly very quickly!
